GA-03: Small Arcade Games
-------------------------
7034/0088 Arcade Games #1 Small Programs Disk
-------------------------
3-Demon
Price, John D. & Richardson, Rick
$10
is a PacMan game from the perspective of PacMan for a really interesting twist
on an old game, or switch to an overhead view.
Chopper Commando 2.0 (CHOPPER)
Currie, Mark & Schindlbeck, T.J.
$?
Fly a helicopter combat mission, bombing and shooting the enemy. There are
three levels of play, and all of them are tough, even the "wimp" level.
CPokeman
is similar to PacMan. It is not as slick, but it works well and does not
require graphics. Slow-down required. Uses ASCII characters.
Flightmare (FLIGHT)
is a two-part arcade game. You are in a jet. First you fight other jets,
then you switch screens and must battle ground forces on motorcycles. Very
good graphics.
Hopper
is like Frogger.
Invaders
is like Space Invaders.
Janitor Joe (JUMPJOE)
Bales, Kevin
$0
is stranded in a space station with crazed robots trying to kill him. You have
to find his keys and escape. This is a very well done "jumping and ladder" type
of game.
Pango
You attempt to clear bees in the field within one minute by squashing them
with blocks.
Qubert
Piazza, Bill
$?
The object is to make "Bert" jump from one tile to another causing tiles to
change color. After changing all tiles, you move on to the next level.
Troff
Soumarokov, N.
$10
is a game that combines the old "Snake" type game with the old "Blockade/Tron"
type game to come up with a tough new challenge. You must race the computer's
snake to get to the randomly appearing "pellets", and at the same time try to
make the computer's snake run into your snake, a wall or itself while avoiding
having the computer's snake do the same to you. There are four levels of
randomly moving walls. Pascal source code is included. Requires a 286 machine,
EGA and DOS 3.3+. The game is well designed, challenging and fun to play. (The
author is a 17 year-old Soviet citizen living in Vienna, Austria.)

Arctic Adventure vol.1 2.0 (ARCTIC)
Micro F/X Software
$10
is another installment in the exciting Nevada Smith adventure series. You
start on the arctic map and must find your way around the hazardous ice caves,
searching for the remaining fragments of a map that will eventually lead you
to the location of the hidden treasure cave. Nevada will face freezing waters,
diabolical traps, slippery ice patches, falling stalactites, runaway
snowballs, and even the Abominable Snowman. This is addictive arcade action at
it's best - great graphics, but only CGA-compatible video required. (Even
monographics systems can run it with CGA emulation software from PsL on disk
#860.)
Brick
Bly, Vincent
$?
is an arcade game in 16 color graphics and can be used with any monitor.
BumpMaze 1.5 (BUMPMAZ)
Soleau, William
$15
We were not sure about adding this game. On the one hand, it seems like it
might be too difficult and uncontrollable to be any fun. On the other hand,
maybe it just requires more hours of practice to be fun than we had available
for testing it. Here is the concept: imagine a pool game in which you lay a
dozen bricks or two-by-four's around the table that has only one hole, one
object ball, and the cue ball. The object is to use the cue ball to push or
guide the object ball into the hole. Both of the balls are constantly and
rapidly moving around, bouncing off the walls, bricks and each other in all
directions. To give you an idea of the difficult, you are allowed eight
minutes(!) to get the ball in the hole. (The opening screen seems to say to
use the cursor keys to move the Pusher, but it is really saying to use the
cursor keys to view the rest of the on-line documentation, which in turn tells
you which keys to use to play the game.)
Dragon (DRAGNFW)
Willshaw, F. A.
$?
is a game like Breakout, but with a lot of twists.
Killer
is an arcade game in which you wipe out the killer bees. (Note: when you
end the game, it aborts with a "file not found" error. We don't know what file
it is looking for, but it doesn't affect the play of the game.)
Kong
is similar to the arcade game Donkey Kong. The graphics are a little on
the crude side, but we still found the game to be challenging. Speed and
sound are user adjustable.
MetaPin
is a pinball game. You select change the number of players with the right
shift key. Start the game by pressing the left shift key. Adjust the starting
shot force with the up and down cursor keys. Control the flippers with the
left and right shift keys. Slow-down required (see notes, above).
Proton
Fencik, Mike
$0
is patterned after the life size game in which two teams sneak around a room
and try to zap each other with phasers.

7034/0678 Arcade Games #3 Small Programs Disk
-------------------------
Batalia
is a two-player game. You and your opponent each have a space ship and the
object is to be the first to shoot the other a total of ten times. Barriers,
etc, are placed on the screen for you to hide behind and maneuver around. The
screen changes after each hit.
Creeps 2.1
Applegate, Bob
$10
is an MS-DOS version of an arcade game that dates back to the old Apple and
Radio Shack Model I computers. The idea is that your ship (or whatever) has
to navigate around a grid of blocks in which the enemy is also moving around
in force. The levels we tried were not extremely challenging (the enemy never
shoots back, for example). So it is simply a matter of time before you mop up
the enemy forces.
Nitefire (NITEFIR)
is a two-player tank game. You take turns moving or shooting. Before
shooting, you can adjust the angle and velocity. The first one to hit the
other wins.
PopCorn
Lacaze, M.
$0
is a fantastic breakout game with all kinds of special effects. There are two
problems: the documentation is in French, and the game plays at a speed about
ten times that of the surrounding graphics. It is possible to change the speed
of the game by entering "POPSPEED n" (where "n" is some number from 0 to
30000) at the DOS prompt before entering POPCORN, but if you make the number
high enough to slow down the play of the game to a reasonable rate, the
surrounding graphics (such as the start-up screen) become excruciatingly slow.
If you put in a lower number to speed up the surrounding graphics, the speed
of play is impossibly fast. We partially resolved this by starting the program
and turning off the Turbo mode on our computer when ready to play, but if
someone can figure out a better solution, please let us know.
Here are some things we were able to figure out: to use a mouse, press
F3 at the main screen (you must load your mouse driver before running the
program); to use the keyboard, press F4; to assign keys, press F5 and then
press a key for left movement, right movement, and a "fire" key. Press F1 to
play.
Tank
is a two-player tank game, or you can play the computer. Unlike NiteFire,
you don't take turns. Firing, adjustment of angle and velocity, shields,
movement, all take place constantly by both sides. Slow-down required (see
notes, above).
Trap 2.0 [10/93 CD]
Brandt, Bruce
$5
is an unusual and interesting game in which you try to move doors to trap the
"monsters" in the least amount of time.
Turbo (TURBODR)
Ross, Doug
$5
is a race car game. The goal is to get as far as possible while crashing as
few times as possible. You will be slowed down by trucks and pokey cars, just
like in real life, but when you pass them, you have to watch out for the
speeding convertible coming at you from the other direction. (The author can
no longer be reached at the address provided in the documentation.)
Wizzard
is a pinball game.

ABM
Clone Sales
$?
requires you to defend cities against a missile attack. Slow-down required.
Astro
Gangola, Dave
$?
is a good version of Asteroids, but it does not run on a system with a 101-key
keyboard.
Beast
Baker, Dan
$20
is an entertaining arcade game that has evidently been around a while without
our seeing it before. You push blocks around the screen to try to trap the
baddies. The better you do, the harder it gets.
BLORT!
is a strange variant on SPACE INVADERS. Run the program for instructions.
BRDBrain (BRDBRAI)
try to make the bird fly down to the water and catch a fish without
drowning, getting hit by a wave, etc. Requires BASICA or GWBASIC.
Moraff's Entrap 4.1 (ENTRAP)
Moraff, Steve
$0
is a multi-level 3D maze game. You must travel around a suspended grid,
trapping or avoiding pesky monsters. The bad guys get smarter as you go along,
and the going gets tough very quickly. This game is compatible with any video
from Hercules mono to Super VGA. Mouse support is provided.
Gapper
is a high-speed arcade type game. If you have more than an 8088, you will
need a CPU slowdown utility.
Kamakaze (KAMAKAZ)
is an arcade game where the object is for you to kill all the Wimps (the
enemy) before they ram their ships into yours and destroy you. This game is
similar to the old Asteroids game. CGA graphics required.
Monuments of Mars (MARS)
Apogee Software
$12
is a "run, jump and shoot" type game in which your mission is to save captured
astronauts from a secret underground city on Mars. This is another outstanding
game from the publishers of the Kroz series. The graphics and sound effects are
excellent, and you can customize the keyboard for ease of play. You have
unlimited lives in this game, so you can concentrate on playing instead of
trying not to be killed. There are 20 screens to conquer (we only got past
two!), with all sorts of tricky enemies and dastardly traps. This will not run
on an 8088 machine.
SpaceInv (SPACINV)
is an arcade "Space Invaders" type of game.
Xonix
is a simple game that is fun. Use the cursor keys to dart across the box
holding the bouncing whatevers without them hitting your path. As you cross the
box, you continue to reduce the size of the box until you move onto the next
screen.

-------------------------
ASP Attack Plus 2.0 (ASP)
The Hodges Enterprise
$10
is patterned after the old snake games which were among the first games
available for the PC. In the game, you guide the snake around gobbling
up food as it appears. The snake grows longer with each bite, however,
and if you run into yourself or a wall, it's off to snake heaven. What
makes ASP different is that the better you do, the more walls start
sprouting up. If that isn't challenging enough, you can choose to steer
the snake with only left and right turns from the snake's perspective,
as opposed to using the four arrow keys which always result in movement
in the arrow's direction.
Centiped (CENTIPD)
is played like the famous arcade game Centipede. CGA compatible graphics
required; joysticks are supported but not required.
Lander
is a "lunar lander" type of program written in Turbo Pascal.
LEM
requires you to try to land a lundar lander or the moon. BASICA or GWBASIC
required.
Moon
is an arcade game in which you try to keep the enemy from stealing fuel
while your ship is being refueled.
Ninja
Kemmetmueller, Robert
$0
is a graphics, arcade-type game where you fight the enemy ninjas by kicking,
striking, ducking and jumping.
Pirates
Wanta, Michael J.
$0
puts you in command of the pirate space ship ROGUE II. Your mission is
to plunder the galaxy, and avoid destruction by the forces of good. You
can visit planets, gamble in cosmic casinos, dock with space stations,
and generally wreck havoc on an otherwise peaceful universe.
Pyramid
is an arcade-type game where you move up and down the pyramid trying to
change the colors of all the blocks without getting hit by the bad guys. It
requires CGA and either an 8088 machine or a greatly slowed down 286.
Round42
is a space invaders game with 42 rounds of different aliens to zap. This
is definitely at the top of the heap of space invader type games. A slow-down
utility may be needed.
Spacewar (SW-BS)
Seiler, Bill
$20
Destroy the other ship before it destroys you. Use your Photon torpedoes or
phasers to reduce its shield energy. A hit with no shields will destroy the
ship.

Arcade Volleyball (AV)
is a cute, simple little game in which two little round characters play
volleyball by jumping and moving back and forth to hit the ball. The ball
bounces off the sides and top of the screen to give some strange angles. This
is a two-player game.
Ball
Galifir Developments
$10
is a computer hockey game in which you can play the computer or a friend, play
a league or let the computer play itself - all as any two of a dozen different
teams with different characteristics. It took a few tries just to understand
the options at the beginning, but once we got going, it was a fun and
challenging game.
Cubits
Schaller, Brian
$20
requires you to quickly move all the cubits to the next level by kicking,
flipping or pushing them into the corner elevator while avoiding the time
wasters. "Quickly" is the key word here - things moved much too quickly for us.
If you have a 286/386, you will probably need a slow-down utility.
Motor Mania (MOTORMA)
Hewitt, Eric
$11
is high speed motorbike game in which you race through a series of jumps.
This is similar to the arcade Excitebike. On our system, the menu overwrote
itself on one line, meaning that you had to actually move the cursor one line
past a choice to select it.
Pearl
Dore, M. C.
$15
requires you to defend the ships in Pearl Harbor from the incoming Japanese
planes. Good graphics.
Snake
Lorati, Roger
$5
is another variation of the old Snake game in which you must guide the
constantly growing snake around the screen to eat the pellets without
running into itself or other obstacles. There are a couple of
interesting twists to this one.
Striker
Williams, Derek
$10
requires you to navigate a helicopter through enemy territory and complete five
different missions. Various obstacles, including five different kinds of
aliens, gun turrets and missiles, try to keep the player from completing his
mission. CGA compatible graphics required; joysticks are optional.

MainBreak 4.0 (MAINBRK)
Soleau, William
$?
is similar to Up the Wall, but requires a mouse. Your job is to connect passages
for the water to flow through without leaving gaps in the water main.
Race
Erikson, Carl
$5-$15
is a game of miniature car racing. The cars can accelerate, decelerate, or turn
through the race courses while many obstacles block their progress including
walls, slopes, gates, tornadoes, and gas slicks. The more tracks a car
successfully completes, the better the car becomes in areas such as
acceleration, speed, traction, and helicopter speed. Also, Race! lets the user
design his own race tracks on which the cars compete. CGA compatible video is
required and an EGA version is provided. The game is fun and challenging.
SuperFly 2.0 (SFLY)
Anderson, Nels ASP
$17-$19
Armed only with a fly swatter, you must swat flies, roaches and spiders while
avoiding being trapped by them. The goal is to swat the Super Fly itself, and
each round presents different obstacles that make it increasingly difficult to
end the insect menace. EGA or VGA required, and the graphics are classic "Nels
Anderson" (author of Shooting Gallery, et al).
Up the Wall (UPWALL)
Soleau, William
$10
is a fun and fast-paced arcade game. The object is to lay pipe (in effect) for
water to flow through. The further the water gets when it starts flowing, the
higher your score. This is not easy. CGA compatible video needed.

-------------------------
Diamond Dash (DIADASH)
Fleming, David
$15
is a run-jump-ladder-climbing type game, but instead of jumping over bad guys,
you have to blast holes for them to fall into so that you can walk over them.
There are five levels of play. EGA/VGA required.
Galactic Battle (GALACTC)
Goble, Brian
$0
is a shoot-em-up arcade game for one player. You must use your spaceship to
fight off attacks by hordes of evil aliens, destroying as many enemies as
possible while enhancing the features of your ship. The game features an
infinite number of levels, each consisting of 11 different waves of aliens. At
the end of each level you must do battle with the deadly Mother Ship, and each
impending wave brings on smarter and more powerful aliens.
Galactix I (GTIXI)
Wright, Richard L.
$10
is an arcade game in which you must find objects and solve puzzles while
avoiding dangerous robots and guards. This is a very tough game. Fast machines

Prospector 1.0 (PROSPCT)
Chapel, Lee
$25
is an interesting arcade game with excellent graphics and play. You must guide
the prospector through a 10 level gold mine, picking up gold nuggets,
negotiating obstacles such as elevators and conveyor belts, and avoiding the
various creatures living in the mine. Requires an EGA/VGA.
Rimtrix
Wright, Richard L.
$10
is an arcade puzzle game in which you guide a ball through a series of tiles and
into colored cups. The path of the ball can be changed by rotating and moving
the tiles. This is a tough game, and faster machines may require a slow-down
utility (#2409). Requires 512K.
SpaceKill I (SPACEKL)
Neurosport
$15
is a space battle game in which you must maneuver through asteroids and mine
fields, defend your docking station as well as your ship, and fight the enemies
ships. EGA/VGA required.
Space Spirals (SSPIRAL)
Anderson, Alan
$4
is an unusual space arcade game. You have to protect a space station and an
approaching star ship from attack. Each swarm of attackers has new, more
devious ships. The level of play can be set from easy to hard and slow to
fast, so it is suitable for most ages.
TV Guided Bombs (TVBOMB)
VTS
$3-$13
is a game in which you must guide a camera equipped bomb down the air shaft of
the bunker.

Airpuck 2.0
Mandel, Bob
$10
is a 3-D version of air hockey similar to Shufflepuck Cafe on the Mac. You play
against an unusually good computer opponent. A mouse is required, and the game
appears to require EGA/VGA.
Anthill
Busch, Chris
$10
puts you inside a giant ant bed in the Amazon. You must work your way through
the nest, picking up ant eggs and gems while avoiding the deadly ants. The game
has many levels of play, each more dangerous and challenging than the last.
EGA/VGA required.
Dunjax 1.02
Mather, Jeff and Niec, David
$5
Shoot and jump your way through massive underground labryinths filled with
hazardous traps and relentless creatures. Good graphics and a challenging game.
A slowdown routine is provided that allows acceptable speeds on high-speed
machines.
Nova Strike 2.1 (NOVA)
Nova Strike Software
$8
is a space flight simulation combat game. You must develop the flying and
fighting skills and strategies necessary to destroy all the enemy ships.
Requires a 286 or better, VGA and a mouse.
Wilf II 3.0 (WILF)
Cluley, Graham
$17
you must guide the wibbling Wilf through a series of mazes, while avoiding the
evil Glumphs. Your mission is to spread strawberry jam over the entire maze,
and if you succeed, you are given another maze to wander. You can fire
pom-poms at the Glumphs, but they always seem to come back. Beware the evil
Frank, who gobbles up your jam almost as quickly as you can spread it. The
SoundBlaster compatible sound effects included are hilarious. CGA or better
video is required.
X-Ball
Wright, Richard L.
$9
is a game where the object is to hit matching pairs of tiles with a bouncing
ball. This is a challenging game that requires a lot of skill and concentration.

Requires 512K and EGA/VGA.
Eye of Horus 1.5 (HORUS)
JMS Enterprises
$10
Aliens from a distant dimension are threatening the Earth. In this shoot-em-up

ships at higher levels that can block your shots. Requires EGA/VGA and a mouse.
Moraff's Super Blast I (SBLAST) 08-93 CD
Moraff, Steve
$0
is an advanced "breakout" type game. There are multiple screens with lots of
surprises, including sticky paddles, multi-balls, and much more. Some of the

fun. Virtually all video systems are supported, from CGA to Super-VGA. A
joystick is supported on AT's.
Willy
is a jump-and-climb type of arcade game that is very well done.
Xlagit
Tangtrakul, Atakorn

points you amass, the faster the action gets. If Sadamm's smiling face appears
you can blow him away for extra points. This game requires a mouse, and has
excellent EGA/VGA graphics, but also supports CGA.

EGA/VGA.
Mad Painter 1.0 (MADPAIN)

you advance a level and begin again. Requires 512K RAM and EGA/VGA.
Squirmer 1.30C (SQUIRM)
Parker, Stephen L.
$10
is a sophisticated variation of the old Snake type game in which the
ever-lengthening worm must maneuver around to swallow stuff while
avoiding running into things. Transporters take you to different levels,
and eating a clock gives you more time. Eating dynamite sticks will
cause part of the worm to explode, making it easier to maneuver, but if
the worm is not long enough, it may all explode and you die.
Vendetta 1.0 (VENDETA)
Elder, Steven
$10
The object of the game is to shoot the bad guys that are hiding around
town. You have to scroll the screen to see the whole town, and you have

20040/1611 ASCII Arcade Games Small Programs Disk
-----------------------------
(Note: "ASCII characters" are the characters and lines that can be displayed
on the screen without using true graphics. These games will work on any kind
of video card and monitor.)
ACQB
is the ArmChair QuarterBack program. It is similar to the commercial NFL
Challenge program, but much simpler than Cunning Football on disk #1428.
CF lets you control the actual play, while ACQB only lets you select a play
(against the computer) and then tells you the result.
Airtrax
is an air traffic control game. You guide planes in without any crashes
and your salary goes up. Object of the game is to get a high salary.
Air Traffic Controller 1.0 (ATC) (10-93 CD)
Cascoly Software ASP
$24
is a simulation of the duties of a sector air traffic controller. The object is
to guide twenty planes safely through your sectors. You have control of landing,
taking off and changing altitudes with twenty levels of difficulty.
Battle Of Kursk (KURSK)
Kowalski, Matthew
$0
is a strategy/simulation game of World War II tank warfare. The strategy
comes in proper positioning of your tank to blast your opponent. The tanks
are intended to be historically accurate in their make-up, despite the fact
that only ASCII characters are used. Frankly, we found this to be a little
simplistic (dull), but we've seen it get rave reviews elsewhere, so that may
just be a matter of personal taste.
Bugs
Ouye, M.
$?
is similar to the arcade game centipede. Fast paced and challenging.
Depthchg (DEPTHCH)
Your ship goes across the top of the screen while subs cross below it at
varying depths. You try to blow up the subs. BASIC required.
Islands of Danger 3.2 (DANGER)
Carr, Richard
$9
is an excellent shoot-em-up arcade game. You must clear seven islands (on a
scrolling playing field) of missile launchers to save your friend who has been
captured by the Mad Emperor. Sound and joystick are optional. Works on all
video. The demo mode serves as a tutorial.
Lawn Mower 2.0 (LAWN)
Orr, Christopher D.
$0
challenges you to cut a lawn in the least amount of time without running over,
through or into objects and without using up all your spare blades. Finish one
yard and different ones come up.
Pacworm
is similar to one of the first "arcade" games ever written for a PC. It is
simple, but fun and requires good reflexes. The point is to guide a worm around
the screen and gobble up things as they pop up. Each time the worm eats
something, it grows longer. If the head of the worm bumps into a wall or into
itself, it dies.
Pitfall
You have to guide your jet through an endless pit, avoiding the curving
walls and other dangers.
Snakes
lets you compete against the computer or a friend. As you move around the
screen, you are leaving a "wall" behind you. The goal is to cut down your
opponents space so that he will crash into a wall before you do.

Hover Craft 1.01 (HOVER)
Carr Software
$?
is a game in which you are the commander and have six hover crafts with which
to destroy all of the enemy missile launchers on the island. The game uses
ASCII characters instead of true graphics, so while the graphics are not as
impressive looking, the program will work on any kind of video.
Racecar 1.2
Soleau, William
$0
guide a car down a race track, avoiding obstacles and oil slicks, following
curves in the road and hitting ramps to jump over gullies. The clever use of
ASCII graphics means that the program should work on any video setup.
Space Investors 1.1 (SPACEIN)
Pinnacle Software
$0
is a space invaders type game that will work on any monitor because it uses
text characters to "draw" the ships. Pascal source code is included.
Tommy's Stompers (STOMPER)
Tommy's Toys
$2
is a game for younger children. You try to keep away from various Martian
beasties, such as spiders that come down the screen on webs. To make things
interesting, as you flee, you must also keep from getting squashed by the
Stompers. The use of ASCII-graphics means that the program will run on any
video. On VGA, we had trouble seeing the gray-on-black "anvils".
Viper
Kemmetmueller, Robert
$0
is a shoot-em-up space arcade game that you will swear is using true graphics
but instead, it is using ASCII characters that will work on any display. We

this is the best. The same author has a game called Snakepit, an "Indiana

Mission Maze 1.0 (ADMAZE)

Beyond Columns 1.1 (BEYOND)
Taylor, Brad P.
$0
"...is like Tetris, only different." That's what our write-up of this program
would have been before reading the background given by the author, who says:
"The original Columns game was invented for the X window system by Jay
Geertsen of HP" before Tetris came along.
In this game, you control columns as they move down the screen, much like with
Tetris. However, each column is composed of three different blocks and you
make the columns dissolve by getting three blocks of the same color or design
(your choice of several block designs is given) in a row, vertically,
horizontally, or diagonally.
To further complicate things, you can rearrange the blocks within the columns
so that, for example, if a column on the bottom has two green blocks on top
and the falling column has a green block in the middle, say, you can rotate
the middle green block to the bottom of the column so that when it lands on
the column with the two green blocks, there will be three green blocks in a
row, causing them to dissolve. In our opinion, this program is a lot more
difficult than Tetris. The Easy level drove us to a nervous breakdown. The bad
news: it is for VGA or MVGA only, and it appears that you have to reboot to
get out of the program.
Rodeo Poker 1.0 (ROPO)
Herring, Steve
$8
is a western-style Tetris game. Instead of falling blocks, this game uses
playing cards that drop down four chutes for you arrange into groups of five to
make winning poker hands. You can jump a card from one chute to another. The
better the hand the bigger the score.

Brix 2.0
Dlugosz Software
$5
is an impressive Tetris-type arcade game. As you progress to higher levels, the
game speed increases, the playing field becomes smaller, and the puzzle shapes
become more complicated. Other features include solo play or head-to-head
competition, four difficulty levels ranging from easy to impossible, and more. A
sliding tile puzzle game is also included. EGA/VGA required.
Double Link (DOUBLNK)
Tupaczewski, Paul
$15
is a very addictive variant of Tetris. An oblong shape, which is
actually two round units linked together, is dropped down the chute.
Sometimes they are the same color, but often they are not.
When four units of the same color are aligned together vertically or
horizontally, they disappear and the other units in the links are left
behind. If a unit left behind was being held aloft by its partner, it
drops when the partner is removed. This can set up a chain reaction as a
unit drops to form a group with three matching units below it. Each
level starts with more and more Meanies (units with faces) in the chute.
Once all of the Meanies are removed by grouping matching colors with
them, the level is over.
Multix
Blackstone Software
$10
is an interesting and challenging variation of the game Tetris. The falling
pieces are very irregularly shaped, so placing them is very challenging. You can
"crunch" a portion on the piece to make it fit better, but this will subtract
from your score. Requires EGA.
Teamtris (TEAMTRS)

Breakout (BREAKOU)
Strausberg, Hal
$0
is a new version of the old Breakout type of game. It requires an EGA monitor
and supports a mouse. Though we had a little trouble with the mouse
operation, it did work well with the cursor keys and took good advantage of
the extra colors available on an EGA.
EGA-roids 1.0c (EGAROID)
Designer Software
$5
is a high-resolution asteroids game for the EGA. The graphics are terrific,
but we had trouble getting the feel of the keys the program uses for different
functions. We suspect that the key selection was based on a standard keyboard
rather than the 101-key keyboard. EGA and an 80286-based machine are
required.
We have also included in this archive a patch (by John Deurbrouck) that will
increase the maximum number of ships from three to thousands, so that you can
get more practice. It will also create a new EGAroid file that allows only one
ship, for when you are ready to really prove your skills.

Bananoid (BANANOI)
Rieder, William
$0
is the best "breakout" type game we have ever seen on a PC. It requires VGA or
MCGA, a mouse, and at least a 286-10. The graphics are beautiful. One unusual
feature is that the playing field is two screens wide and scrolls smoothly as
you move the mouse. Another unusual feature (for a breakout game) is that
every once in a while, one of the colored blocks that you are breaking out
falls down the screen and if you catch it with the paddle, it changes the
paddle (to narrower, double-wide, or "sticky"), or it changes the paddle to a
ship which can fire laser blasts at the remaining blocks (while the ball is
still bouncing around, of course), or it advances you to the next screen.
Which of these happens depends on the color of the block. The game appears to
have been fashioned after the arcade machine game Araknoid. If you have the
requisite hardware, this is one game you do not want to miss. (The author is
no longer at the address provided in the documentation.)
DragCity 3.0 (DRAGCIT) 08-93 CD

$10

graphics of retail games like Grand Prix Circuit, is still has some
entertainment value.

changing graphics makes the game more interesting than Kaboom!. It takes a

Gravity Wars (GRAVWAR)
Ismail-Beigi, Sohrab
$0
is an interesting variation of the old two-player, tank aim-and-shoot type game.
Instead of tanks, you have the Enterprise against a Klingon vessel, and the
gravity of nearby planets and stars affect your shots. For each game, you can
toggle through randomly drawn star systems to find one that looks particularly

Joust VGA (JOUST)
Sharpless, Dave
$10

still quite playable on other machines.
PCMan
